Dear reader, good evening,
Today we are dealing with exit restrictions: Chancellor Merkel wants to consult the Prime Minister at a Corona crisis meeting on Sunday. Some country heads are already creating facts.
The topic of the day: Fighting the corona virus – are curfews now coming?
Walking with the nuclear family is allowed, drinking beer with friends is prohibited: in the fight against the spread of the corona virus, Prime Minister Markus Söder has announced national exit restrictions for Bavaria. The rules apply from midnight, initially for two weeks. Söder justified the move with a massive increase in the Corona cases in Bavaria and the admission that the appeals of the past few days had not been enough. Too many people simply ignore the requirement to reduce social contacts to the bare minimum. Our Munich correspondent Jan Friedmann classifies the decision here.
Several federal states followed suit on Friday: Among other things, Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and Baden-Württemberg announced stricter restrictions on public life. In several countries, all restaurants are closed and gatherings of more than five people are prohibited. Curfews are “one of the last measures,” said Hesse Prime Minister Volker Bouffier.
Chancellor Angela Merkel has arranged for a conference call with the heads of state on Sunday evening. Chancellor-in-chief Helge Braun told SPIEGEL that the behavior of the population at the weekend would be closely examined. Saturday is a “decisive day”. In plain language, this means that if too many citizens still do not adhere to the requirement of social distance, there are severe curfews.
